Ben Affleck No Longer Directing The Batman
Ben Affleck Steps Down as Director of The Batman
Ben Affleck who was set to star and direct the upcoming superhero film is stepping away from the director’s chair.
The news comes by way of Variety whose sources state that the decision was a mutual one between Affleck and Warner Bros.
The actor is still set to star in the film as the caped crusader and will remain a producer on the title.
In a statement, Ben Affleck said the following:
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions.
“Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.
“I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
The project was initially intended to shoot this Spring with a 2018 release date.
A search for a new director is underway and according to Variety, War of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is on the shortlist.
In a short statement Warner Bros. said the following regarding the decision:
“Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”
Ben Affleck recently starred in and directed Live by Night, a crime drama based on the novel by Dennis Lehane.
Affleck will next appear as the character in this year’s Justice League on November 17th after starring alongside Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Before then, DC fans have Wonder Woman to look forward to which is due out June 2nd and is directed by Patty Jenkins.
