Gears of War Movie Gains A Writer

Universal Studios have chosen who will write the screenplay for the upcoming Gears of War movie based on the video game series.

The news comes by way of Deadline who report that Shane Salerno will be working on the script while Universal’s Dylan Clark will be a producer.

Salerno currently has writing credits on all of James Cameron’s Avatar sequels and also has a writing credit for Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Microsoft announced their partnership with Universal Studios in October 2016 during the release of Gears of War 4 and it is understood that the film won’t be based on any particular game in the series rather focusing on a new squad of characters and a new story.

Video game adaptations haven’t been particularly successful in the past but that hasn’t stopped big publishers from trying with the most recent being Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed.

The first development of a Gears of War film began in 2007 when the rights belonged to New Line Cinema, the project got as far as having a director attached in Len Wiseman but over time the project ceased to be viable.

The Gears of War series has proven to be very popular for Microsoft existing for over ten years and grossing over $1 billion in its lifetime.

Which part of the Gears of War universe would you like to see explored in a film? Is a film for this series a good idea?
