Han Solo Spin-off Loses Its Directors
Han Solo Directors Depart Due to ‘Creative Differences’
In a statement this week, Disney announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will no longer direct the second Star Wars spin-off film featuring Han Solo.
The news first broke via The Hollywood Reporter and on Tuesday president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy released the following statement:
“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented film-makers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.”
Filming on the project began in January 2017 and is scheduled for release in May 2018.
Lord and Miller had the following to say on their departure from the film:
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”
This is less than ideal timing for Disney and according to The Hollywood Reporter, sources state there are still several weeks worth of shooting for Han Solo still to be done plus reshoots this summer.
The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as the charismatic smuggler, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson.
Directors departing from films isn’t an uncommon occurrence but usually takes place before production gets under way.
Rumours circulating online of a replacement have included names such as Ron Howard, Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan and Joe Johnston although take these with a pinch of salt.
After directing The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, Lord and Miller still have a number of other projects in the works including a sequel to The Lego Movie and an untitled animated Spider-Man film featuring Miles Morales.
What do you think of the departure of Lord and Miller from the Han Solo film? Who do you think should be brought in to direct now?
