Microsoft E3 2014 Press Conference Highlights

Microsoft E3 2014 Press Conference Highlights

Given last year’s E3 it was important that Microsoft came out this year with a clear message and consistent focus. Rather than spending anytime on apps, television or the ‘all-in-one’ entertainment package that has been promoted in the past, this year was solely dedicated to games, showing off existing franchises as well as new IP’s. Here are 5 highlights of this year’s show:

Sunset Overdrive

This game is a new property that will be exclusive to Xbox. Microsoft showed off a cinematic trailer detailing the vibrant and zany tone of this new world as well as a gameplay demo that demonstrated the crazy weapon combos and free-roaming traversal. Offering humour and poking fun at regular video game tropes in the cinematic trailer, while introducing fun gameplay, helped set Sunset Overdrive apart at this conference, while being a welcome breath of fresh air among the regular shooters and RPG’s we see every year. The game will be available October 28th.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Despite being leaked prior to E3 this year, the Master Chief Collection offers undeniable value. Containing Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, a newly remastered Halo 2, as well as Halo 3 and Halo 4, the collection also offers a glimpse into the next Halo game allowing players to participate in the Halo 5: Guardians beta this December. In addition the collection contains every piece of DLC released for any of the games so every map will be present. This is a great way for new players to experience the Halo franchise and plenty for older fans too with a remastered (and untouched) Halo 2 multiplayer. The collection will debut on November 11th 2014.

Crackdown

Closing the show was the announcement of a new Crackdown game. Simply titled ‘Crackdown’, the cinematic trailer showed 4 player co-op and looked to show the same sort of tone and gameplay we have come to know from this franchise as well as an explosive and action packed story. A new game was long rumored and now we have official confirmation. An Xbox exclusive, the game currently has no release date.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty kicked off the show with a bang, with an exciting and explosive gameplay trailer. Showing some of the action Call of Duty is well-known for, the trailer introduced some new mechanics such as smart grenades and a jetpack, yet still contained a familiar feel that is highly popular amongst fans. While not a big surprise, Microsoft also announced that DLC would premiere first on Xbox, continuing a partnership that has been ongoing for a number of years with Activision which will be comforting for Xbox owners and Call of Duty fans.

Games

Above all else, it was refreshing to see Microsoft focus solely on games this year, especially at E3 which is a gaming convention. By announcing some difficult business decisions prior to E3 such as, the unbundling of Kinect and the reduction in price, Microsoft were able to offer a clear message to gamers: That Xbox will have a number of great games this year and in the years to come. This is a reassuring message after the lack of clarity when the console was launched and a number of policies were changed regarding how the Xbox One would work.
