Pre-E3 2014 Wishes
Pre-E3 2014 Wishes
E3 is right around the corner. On June 10-12, the latest and greatest will gather to showcase their consoles and games for the upcoming calendar year and beyond. Companies such as Microsoft and Sony will be trying to ‘win’ this year’s E3. Here are 5 general and specific wishes I have for E3 2014.
Star Wars Games
Since the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney and the announcement of multiple films in the works, there has been a revitalization of the Star Wars franchise recently. This has extended to video games too. We know that the EA studio Visceral Games, the studio behind the Dead Space franchise, is working on a Star Wars game as well as DICE, the studio behind the Battlefield franchise, which was confirmed to be working on a Star Wars: Battlefront game at last year’s E3. A trailer and more importantly some gameplay on a next-gen console of both of these games would be welcome to many. While there have been a mixture of great and not-so-great games in the past with the Star Wars license, a fresh take from experienced studios will serve these games well. Also, this is an opportunity for EA to regain some of the trust it has lost from gamers over recent releases such as SimCity or Battlefield 4.
A common complaint about E3 is that too many sequels are announced or showcased. Franchises such as Call of Duty, Battlefield and Assassin’s Creed are often rolled out at E3. With the relatively new Xbox One and Playstation 4 now in play, the time is ripe for new IP’s, both exclusives and 3rd party games. New franchises on the Xbox 360 such as Gears of War and Uncharted on the Playstation 3 arguably defined and were indeed highlights of this last generation. We need new studios and new games to take up this mantle for the next generation. There is also room for more middle-ground games, not a triple-A title or an indie game but a more robust, modestly priced game such as State of Decay on the market that will push competition and demonstrate a different route for developers.
New Mass Effect Game
We’ve not heard much from the Mass Effect franchise since Mass Effect 3 ended Shepard’s story but we do know that another game is being worked on. While this will undoubtedly not follow Shepard, I am intrigued to know where the franchise is headed. While I liked the way Mass Effect has dealt with player choice and building relationships with your crew, the franchise will also need innovation and change to stay popular. Part of what made the first three games successful was that Shepard was a blank slate, he molded around what the player chose to do with him. If a more linear character with his own agenda is offered in the next entry, how radically will the gameplay differ? Time will tell.
The next-gen consoles have been out a while now and while sales have been good on both parts, there needs to be a bigger push for next-gen consoles. Playstation seems to be headed in the right direction with Playstation Now as are Microsoft with their lowering of the Xbox One price but there needs to be a greater emphasis on what makes these consoles especially unique. Many will be quite happy with their last-gen consoles, especially since many new games will continue to release on these platforms. As for Nintendo, they either need to announce multiple titles with a lot of backing behind them soon for the Wii U or jump ship to a new console, which may be too early for this E3.
As one of the few announced exclusively next-gen games, Arkham Knight is leading the fight for this next generation of gaming. As a fan of the Batman character and Rocksteady, I can’t wait to see more from this game. After the mixed reception to Arkham Origins, I will be interested to see what new elements Rocksteady can introduce to the winning formula. Supposedly their last Arkham game, I’m also intrigued as to where they will go with this character in their last game and for hints as to where they will head with their next game. It will also be a great opportunity to show off some truly next-gen gaming moments.
Well, those are my thoughts. What are you looking forward to seeing at E3 2014 the most? Let me know in the comments below.
