Netflix has been hitting it out of the park with its original content including Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Daredevil to name a few. One more recent show that is on everyone’s mind at the moment is Stranger Things, an 80’s inspired sci-fi show that is both weird and wonderful. The show is the story of a young boy named Will Byers who goes missing under mysterious circumstances and the series of events that follow. There’s a lot going on as the boy’s three young friends’ attempt to find him leads them to a runaway girl with superpowers, the local sheriff uncovers more than a simple disappearance and a distraught mother, played by Winona Ryder, begins to communicate with her son through unusual means.

Stranger Things

The show is unashamedly 80’s and is clearly inspired by the likes of E.T, The Goonies and other 80’s pop culture phenomenon. Its tone and sequence of events pays homage to the likes of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and is also just a really cool sci-fi story. With just 8 episodes, Stranger Things is tightly scripted and well thought out and by the end of the season you’re left wanting more with a second season already green lit. Arguably the show’s best scenes go to the three young friends of Will Byers named Mike, Dustin and Lucas. Each of them is likeable and the group has a great dynamic that makes their friendship feel genuine and honestly just pure fun to watch. The three are endearingly dorky as members of the A/V club at school and frequent players of Dungeons and Dragons. It’s the appearance of Eleven or ‘El’ for short played by Millie Bobby Brown that really escalates the story for the boys as they encounter this strange girl who can move things with her mind.

The plot of the show is mysterious and at times creepy and full of suspense. There’s some fantastic writing and characters involved in the show too. For example, the local sheriff Jim Hopper is a drug addict with a gruff manner but deep down he has heart and wants to get to the bottom to whatever is going on in his quiet town. Each character is gradually drawn deeper into the mysterious goings on which eventually leads to a very satisfying finale as everything comes together. The cinematography of the show is fantastic and is committed to giving everything an 80’s look and feel. A special mention must go to the show’s theme song and music overall too which is also heavily inspired by the 80’s and perfectly matches the tone of the show.

If you’re a fan of 80’s pop culture, sci-fi or just a really cool mystery then Stranger Things is a must watch. You can check out all 8 episodes on Netflix now.
