SDCC 2014 Highlights
Now that Comic Con 2014 is winding down, here is some of the news regarding movies and gaming that have come out from the event. There were plenty of announcements and panels from the likes of DC, Marvel, Paramount and Legendary. Some rumours were confirmed and some were not. Here are the SDCC 2014 highlights:
To kick things off, the Paramount panel had a surprise appearance from both Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey who were each appearing at Comic Con for the first time and came to promote their latest project Interstellar. A new trailer was shown and by all accounts looked impressive. Nolan’s appearance is noteworthy especially because he never came to Comic Con to promote The Dark Knight trilogy. Personally I’m a fan of Nolan’s film and can’t wait to see Interstellar later this year.
In addition to promotion of films already confirmed, a few new films were also announced. At Legendary’s panel it was confirmed that Gareth Edwards will return to direct Godzilla 2, and that the film will contain more recognizable monsters such as Rodan and Mothra. Edwards has a busy schedule with a Star Wars movie to make before the Godzilla sequel. At Marvel’s panel, there was new footage of The Avengers: Age of Ultron which showed off the Hulk-buster armor in action. Also the long in production Ant-Man movie was shown off, with some very early footage, but more importantly, confirmation that Evangeline Lilly will play Hope Pym, the daughter of Hank Pym played by Michael Douglas while Corey Stoll will play the villain Yellowjacket. After Edgar Wright’s much talked about exit from the project, it will be interesting to see how this one turns out with director and comic book fan Peyton Reed taking the helm. The Marvel panel ended with a tease from director James Gunn and Chris Pratt via video message that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is confirmed for July 2017.
In other comic book movie news, DC also had a panel which focused, in terms of movies, on Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice which is due out in 2016. Not only was a new still of Ben Affleck’s Batman shown but also a first look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Finally, some footage was shown of Batman and Superman having a stare off which apparently looked very promising. One film expected to be announced by DC was a Shazam movie after Dwayne Johnson/The Rock teased an image on social media of Shazam fighting his nemesis Black Adam. This seemed to almost confirm a Shazam movie would imminently be announced but no such announcement materialized at the event.
Although Comic Con is not usually an event for big video gaming announcements it was confirmed that The Walking Dead Season 3 will be happening with no plot details to reveal just yet. Finally, in some exciting news, The Last of Us film adaptation will be taken on by director Sam Raimi with rumours floating around that Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams will play Ellie. This was not confirmed at the panel but she has apparently been in talks to feature in the film.
