Star Trek TV Series Coming in 2017

The new series has already been picked up by CBS for a full season and is slated to premiere in January 2017.

The Star Trek series was revived on the big screen back in 2009 receiving mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences and was followed up by a sequel in 2013, Star Trek Into Darkness.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be a fresh take on the classic sci-fi franchise with writer Alex Kurtzman attached who also produced 2009’s Star Trek and co-wrote Star Trek Into Darkness.

Notably the premiere for the new Star Trek series will launch on CBS but subsequent episodes will be available exclusively on CBS All Access, the network’s paid digital and VOD service.

Executive VP and GM of CBS Digital Media, Marc DeBevoise said: “This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before — directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access.

“We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time.

“We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

In the meantime, a third film is on the way titled Star Trek Beyond which is being directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) with the script being co-written by  Doug Jung and Simon Pegg.

The film is slated for release on July 22, 2016, a year that also marks Star Trek’s 50th anniversary.
