The Witcher TV Series Coming to Netflix

A TV series based on the The Witcher series, a set of fantasy books written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, is in development for Netflix.

The Sean Daniel Company and Platige Image which had previously partnered to produce a film based on the popular fantasy series for 2017, will be producing the adaptation for Netflix.

Sapkowski, who will be serving as a creative consultant on the series has said the following:

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.

“I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Oscar-winning director Tomek Baginski who was previously lined up to direct the film will now direct at least one episode per season of the show.

Executive producers Baginski and Jarek Sawko from Platige Image had this to say about the adaptation:

“There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

There is no word currently on which aspect of the series the show will focus on with the book series containing both short stories and the main saga which revolves around Geralt and Ciri.

The main saga of books focuses heavily on Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter.

There was previously a Polish TV series based on the series which ran for 13 episodes.

The Witcher series is of course well-known in the video game world where the stories based on a monster hunter (also known as a Witcher) named Geralt were adapted by Polish studio CD Projekt Red.

Although the studio says it is done with The Witcher for now a card game based on the popular mini-game Gwent is in beta currently.
