Upcoming Films in August 2014

Every month I will post an article about films coming out over the next month and why, or why not, I think they might be worth a watch. For August 2014, we have Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Expendables 3 and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. I’ll sometimes also list a pick of other films releasing that month too. There are some star-studded casts in these upcoming films, most notably in The Expendables 3 and Sin City and there is a lot of excitement about Marvel’s first steps into a more cosmic universe with its space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy. Meanwhile Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has piqued the interest of many but has work to do to win over long-term fans of the comics and the original cartoons.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Upcoming Films in August 2014

Guardians of the Galaxy

From director James Gunn and Marvel studios, comes a space adventure that is sure to be both action-packed and humorous. Although long-term Marvel fans will likely queue up for this one, it is a risk Marvel is taking in the sense that these characters are not nearly as well-known as the likes of Iron Man or Captain America. The plot revolves around Peter Quill played by Chris Pratt who finds himself the subject of a bounty hunt across the galaxy after stealing a mysterious and powerful artifact. To save the galaxy, Quill must team up with a bunch of criminals including Rocket the Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper, Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, Drax the Destroyer played by Dave Bautista, and Groot a tree-like humanoid voiced by Vin Diesel. Early impressions are generally positive, and for those who are interested Guardians of the Galaxy, as with every Marvel film, will also point to the future of the next projects. With a worldwide release date of July 31st, fans don’t have to wait long for this cosmic adventure.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Upcoming Films in August 2014

Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo

Michael Bay (Transformers films) brings his next project to theaters in August with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Starring Megan Fox as April O’Neil and William Fichtner as the villainous Shredder. Early impressions of the first trailer from fans of the characters were skeptical to say the least but with the trailers released since, some fears have been put to rest, with the classic sense of fun and humour encouragingly still present. Nevertheless, this is a bold move to reboot the series and time will tell if it succeeds or not. Nevertheless, Bay will certainly bring the action to the film and the project does have some notable actors attached to it. Those in the U.S. can see this August 15th.

The Expendables 3

Upcoming Films in August 2014

Harrison Ford joins The Expendables

If you’ve seen the first two The Expendables films then you likely know what to expect with this next installment. Featuring returning characters such as Barney Ross played by Sylvester Stallone and Lee Christmas played by Jason Statham. Along with the usual faces and as we’ve come to expect, a number of new faces will show up including Mel Gibson as the villain of the piece as well as Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas. It’s a safe bet to assume there will be plenty of explosions and shooting to appease action fans but little else for general cinema goers. For simple action and demonstrating a star-studded cast, The Expendables usually manages to fulfill its goals. The Expendables 3 blasts its way onto screens worldwide on August 14th.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Upcoming Films in August 2014

Eva Green as Ava Lord

Based on the graphic novels of the same name, co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller return to direct this sequel to the surprise hit Sin City back in 2005. Starring Bruce Willis, Eva Green, Josh Brolin and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Stylish and violent, this crime thriller certainly has an impressive cast to back up its unique artistic style. However, nine years after the original there is a question over whether the general audience still has an appetite for this graphic and vicious world. Fans of the original can see if this sequel fulfills expectations on August 29th worldwide.
