Upcoming Films – July 2015
Here are the latest notable films coming out next month in the UK:
The Terminator franchise hasn’t impressed in recent years and director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Thor: The Dark World) will be hoping to steer the sci-fi series back on track. With a solid cast including Games of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese and the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film will aim to introduce the series to younger audiences and offer plenty of fan service. It remains to be seen whether, unlike Terminator Salvation, the franchise can be a viable commercial and critical success any longer. Terminator Genisys will reach cinemas on July 3rd.
A documentary exploring the life of Amy Winehouse including her musical career and her chequered personal life. Made by the team behind Senna, early critical reviews look positive suggesting the film is a worthy remembrance of the pop singer. Amy offers a different kind of film for July and may stand apart from the usual summer blockbusters. The film will release on July 3rd.
From the mind of Seth MacFarlane comes the return of the crude bear Ted for another adventure. Starring the returning Mark Wahlberg and Seth Macfarlane as the voice of the titular bear, the sequel sees the departure of Mila Kunis and the introduction of Amanda Seyfried. The plot revolves around Ted having to prove he’s a person in a court in order to qualify as a parent. This type of comedy tends to split people down the middle and chances are if you liked the first film, you’ll like the irreverent sequel just as much. Ted 2 wanders onto the big screen on July 10th.
The last title from Marvel this year rounds of a busy summer for Marvel that included Avengers: Age of Ultron and finishes the MCU’s Phase 2. Bringing the action to a much smaller stage is Ant-Man which sees thief Scott Lang reluctantly transformed into a super-hero under the guidance of previous Ant-Man, Hank Pym. Starring Paul Rudd as Scott, Michael Douglas as Pym and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, it remains to be seen if fans will take to the film as they first did when it was under Edgar Wright’s guidance. Undoubtedly, this will be a more traditional action film than Wright’s with director Peyton Reed hoping to place his own stamp on the movie. Ant-Man is released on July 17th.
Created by the talented Pixar studio, Inside Out is the story of Riley, an angsty adolescent who is uprooted from her home to move to San Francisco due to her father’s work. Much of the film is seen through the eyes of Riley’s emotions, small beings inside her head each representing an emotion: Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. With the voices of Amy Poehler and Bill Hader, Inside Out promises to be a creative and fun approach to a story about the tried and true theme of growing up. Reviews have been extremely positive and the film is supposedly as moving as it is inventive. Inside Out is released on July 24th.
